RE: Legal rig length

Here in Minnesota your total rig can't be more that 70ft and when we got our 5er they told us that your camper can't be more than 28ft if you want to tow a boat or trailer behind it.

RE: Got new Rockwood 8280SS home, 1st impressions

We get right around the 10 mpg range pulling ours which isn't much different from our TT which we got like 11-12 mpg. Although its not great it's better than getting 7-8 mpg like I thought I was gonna get. Still we really like our 5er

RE: size of 5er and RV parks

I would think it would be something to consider. Our 5er is only 26 ft and I know some of the sites that we've had there would of been no way to get a bigger unit in there. Although with a longer unit you have a lot more living space. So there are pros and cons to a longer unit. Good luck

RE: Got new Rockwood 8280SS home, 1st impressions

We really like our rockwood and we looked at the same model that you have but, because of the length we went with the 8244 instead. In Minnesota your 5er can't be more than 28 ft long if you want to tow a boat or trailer behind it. Just curious what do you get for gas mileage towing your unit?

RE: Think We're Going Back

I know around here MH similar to yours are going for 40k. Pretty sad considering they go for 100-200k new. Not a good time to be selling. Good luck

RE: Why a 5'er??

Easy of hooking and unhooking, lots storage, roomy, easier to back into tight spots, able to tow a boat or trailer behind, more stable to pull down the road. We are very happy that we upgraded to a 5er.

RE: Electric Awning Feedback

We have a power awning on our Rockwood and it is nice and quick for opening and closing but, I prefer the manuel awning. With the power awning you can't tilt one side down to let the rain water run off and for putting lights on you have to have a step stool to reach the awning roll.

RE: Tow Veh Purchase?

Everyone has his own finances, but if trying to save money:
Your proposed truck is to be essentially insurance in case you might have to move the trailer. Meanwhile the truck costs a huge bunch and needs insurance itself. Plus it will just kill you for fuel as a daily driver. How much does it cost to hire somebody else to move the rig if you change locations compared with the cost of owning the truck? Why not just get real insurance for the trailer (since you are not paying house insurance instead) and get a little car that is good on gas?
The money saved on the truck could go towards wine, women, and song instead of being wasted!
I was thinking the exact same thing. Even though you might find a diesel truck that will get 20 mpg if your lucky your still going to be paying more for diesel fuel. On the other hand if you could find someone to move the trailer for you and get a car that would get somewhere in the 30's mpg range think of how much money you would be saving yourself. Just a thought anyways

RE: cost of hitch

Being that you have a long boxes you won't need a slider hitch that's for sure. We have a Reese Signature 16k slider hitch that has the mounting brackets under the bed of the pickup and we paid 1200 for ours installed which I thought was alittle bit high. I guess it all depends on if you want the mounting rails in the bed or under the bed of the truck that will determine the cost. I would also suggest looking for a hitch where it not only pivets front to back but, from side to side as well.

RE: A question re: Septic tanks ?

You have to close the valve even if you have it hooked up to the septic tank. I learned that lesson a number of years ago. If you keep it open not only will you get a bad smell but, you will also get little flying bugs coming out of the toilet not to mention getting plugged up.

RE: 5th Wheel Ultra Light Quality Ratings?

We have a Rockwood Ultra lite which is also made by Forest River and so far we are very happy with it. We had a coachmen before and I have to say that the interior quality is much better on the Rockwood.

RE: Rockin' for LOVE

I know before we got a tripod stabilizer under the king pin my wife and I would notice how the front would move whenever we were ummmmmm lets just say when we were making the bed. Now with the tripod it seems pretty solid. Although I'm not sure what it looks like from the outside when someone walks by. :h

RE: Dry camping questions

The hot water heater usually will hold about 6 gallons of water which has it's own plug in order to drain it. The only way you can burn out the heater is if you turn it on.

RE: Forest River or Coachman???

Having owned both brands (coachmen TT and Forest River 5th wheel) I have to say that the Forst Rivers seems to be of better quality. Although we never had any problems with the Coachmen I do notice a difference in the cabinet doors and drawers as the Forest River uses solid wood and the outter walls, closet and bathroom walls seem to be more solid. To be honest though I don't think you can go wrong with either brand.

RE: Wildcat 27RL King Pin Weight

I don't think you would have any problem actually pulling it since your truck has a 6 liter engine it's the weight that I would be concerned about. The camper has a dry weight of 7500 lbs once you get it loaded up we will be at about 8000 or more which would be a bit heavy. If your looking for a 5er to pull with your half ton then I would look at the Wildcat 24RL if your set on Wildcat that is. Otherwise look at the Rockwood series. We have a Rockwood 8244 that is 26 ft long that we pull with our half ton and it pulls very nice. Coachmen has a 5er with the same lay out that your looking at. Coachmen Chaparral 267RLS which is the one we would of gotten but, it's to long to pull a boat behind.

RE: Dometic Electric Awning

Our 5er came with a power awning also and I like how quick it is to put out and take in but, no adjustment for when it rains or for putting the lights on it. I can barely reach the awning roll for putting the light hooks and lights on but, my wife has to stand on a step stool to reach.

Between the Pin box and hitch

Kind of a dumb question here but, what do you all do about lubricating between the pin box on the trailer and the top of hitch? I've looked at those plastic round disc that you use for greasing the hitch but, I don't understand how in the heck it works.

RE: 1/2 TON TV for 5th Wheels, any 5Wtrailers light enough...

Ok so I did a little looking and this is what I found for all you folks that are looking for a smaller fiver to be towed by your 1/2 ton trucks.
Half ton Towable Fiver that weighs under 4000lbs with a tongue of 600lbs.
Guess they are making them lighter and smaller now for those who don't want to tow the big rigs anymore. Kinda strange they list it as tongue weight instead of pin but hey its new and maybe they dont know the difference lol.
Here's the info on this Fiver
STANDARD FEATURES (25 FIFTH):
* 2-Burner Stove w/ Range Hood
* Sink w/ Auto Pump & 9 gal. tank
* 7 Windows
* Power Converter & GFCI
* 6-Gal. LP Hot Water Heater
* 1-piece Marine OSB
w/ Linoleum Flooring
* 14" x 14" Roof Vent
* 2- 3500 lb Electric Brake Axles
* Rubber Roof
* Two 20 lb LP Tanks
* Hot Water Shower (24"X40")
* Toilet w/ Black Tank
* 54" Dinette
* Stereo w/ 4 in & 2 out speakers
* 2- Built-In TV Antennas w/ Jacks
* 13,500 BTU AC with Heater
* 2 Way Refridgerator
* Sleeps 7
* U-Shape Overhead Cabinets
* Clothes Closet
5thW is 3,740 lbs w/ 600 lb tongue
A 1/2 ton can handle a heck of a lot more than 4000lbs and pin of 600. Heck my TT weighed more than 4000lbs. This last weekend there was a couple camping next to us and they had the exact same 5er as you do and pull it with a 1/2 ton. I don't understand why those of us that use a 1/2 ton pickup to pull a 5er are always looked down upon or told that you can't pull anything with a 1/2 ton. I say BS

RE: Type of 5th wheel hitch

I also have a Reese signature series slider and I haven't had any problems with it. To answer your question though on my hitch it's like a hook that goes around the pin.
